MIKHAIL LEONTYEVMikhailLeontyev350

Russian conductor. An artist of ERP. A representative of the younger generation of musicians in St Petersburg.

The biography of relatively young conductor includes impressive facts: performances with the orchestra of the State Cappella of St Petersburg, Academic Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Philharmonic, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Osaka Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg, Chamber Orchestra Arpeggione (Moscow), New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Mikhailovsky Theatre (St Petersburg), Tambov Symphony Orchestra, Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra named after Evgeny Svetlanov, etc.

Mikhail Leontyev (in Russian: Михаил Леонтьев) has received excellent education. He has graduated from the Choral College named after Glinka, the St Petersburg Conservatoire where he studied choral and operatic and symphonic conducting. Also, Arnold Katz’s, Vladimir Fedoseyev’s, Mark Gorenstein’s, Victor Yampolsky’s, Jorma Panula’s and other master-classes have given rise to a bright career. Mikhail Leontyev has been coached by such outstanding conductors like People’s Artist of Russia, Prof Ravil Martynov, Tatiana Nemkina, People’s Artist of USSR, Prof Vladislav Chernushenko.

Mikhail Leontyev has conducted opera and ballet performances at the St Petersburg Conservatoire Theatre and the Hermitage Theatre and in 2008, staged a children’s opera The Little Prince by Banevich, performed in the international opera and ballet festival in Savonlinna (Finland), had concert tours with the Mikhailovsky Theatre in South Korea.

In his theatre music repertoire there are Tchaikovsky’s operas The Queen of Spades, Iolanta and Eugene Onegin, Borodin’s Prince Igor, Verdi’s Masked Ball, Halevi’s Jewess, Janáček’s Katya Kabanova, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. Mikhail Leontyev has also conducted Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake, Delibes’ Coppélia, Elcheva’s musical Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, Uspensky’s Anna Karenina, Donizetti’s comic opera The Bell, Prokofiev’s children’s opera The Giant, etc. His extensive symphonic repertoire contains an awe-inspiring list.

Leontyev has won awards at several international competitions: V Conducting Competition named after Sergei Prokofiev (St Petersburg 2008, Title Winner and the Prize of Yamaha), XV Conducting Competition Min-On (Tokyo, 2009, a Gold Medal, Title of Laureate and the Prize of Asahi), I Open Conducting Competition named after Ilya Musin (Kostroma in 2009, 1st prize and Title of Laureate), I All-Russian Conducting Competition (Moscow 2011, Title of Laureate).

Since 2011, Mikhail Leontyev is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Tambov Symphony Orchestra.

Klaaspärlimängu” avakontserdi sisustas Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta /.../ noore Peterburi dirigendi Mihhail Leontjevi taktikepi all. Usun, et see kontsert lõi seniste Tartus toimunud festivalide publikurekordi. Kava oli huvitav. /.../ Täpse, kuid väljendusrikka žestiga Leontjev lasi Mozarti muusika võlul maksvusele pääseda.
