Biography

Lukas Groen is a well-respected enterprising conductor and organizer with many fresh ideas, fantasy and creativity, excellent communication technique and wide knowledge of repertoire. During the last 20 years he has divided his time between conducting and developing new projects, independently and for well-established artists and institutions. He conductor in resindence of Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta.

In recent years he has been working as a freelance conductor and for several festivals as consultant and conducting pedagogue in masterclasses next to conductors such as Neeme Järvi, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and Kristjan Järvi.

Since 2008 Lukas Groen is responsible for the International Järvi Academy for Conducting and worked as pedagogue and as assistant of Neeme Järvi. He is one of the founders of the Järvi Festival (now Pärnu Music Festival). From 2014 to 2016 he worked as pedagogue and consultant for the Gstaad Academy for Conducting at the Menuhin Festival in Switzerland. Since 2016 Lukas is working closely together with Kristjan Järvi, developing the Baltic Academies Orchestra and masterclasses for Baltic Sea Youth Philharmonic and is managing producer and conductor of Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta in Estonia. His masterclasses are popular with the young generation of conductors.

i-vxWqKvG-LUntil 2008 he worked in the Netherlands among others as chief-conductor of the City Orchestra of Bergen op Zoom and musical director of the Symphonic Choir in Vlissingen. As guest conductor he worked a.o. with Corelli Baroque Orchestra (EE), the Baltic Academies Orchestra, Gstaad Festival Orchestra (Switzerland), Pärnu City Orchestra (EE), Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Matav Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, the Brabantsch Muzyk Collegie (period instruments, NL), the Randstad Orchestra (NL), the Rotterdam Vocal Ensemble “Rovoce”, I-Symfonietti-01 (Switzerland), New Bristol Sinfonia (UK), Orkest van het Oosten (East Holland orchestra) and several youth orchestras in the Netherlands and Estonia. He was invited several times by Novosibirsk Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and conducted its tour in the Netherlands in 2005.

In 2000 Lukas Groen was awarded the most prestigious award for young conductors in the Netherlands the prize and scholarship of the ‘Kersjes van de Groenekan Fonds’. Its jury-chairman Mr. J. M. van Veggel said: “Lukas Groen may, without doubt, be called one of the most promising exponents of the young Dutch generation of conductors…”

In 1997 he became First Prize Winner of the Fourth International ‘Oestereichisch-Ungarische Wettbewerb für Dirigenten’. In September 1999 he was finalist in the 46th ‘Concours International de Jeunes Chefs d’Orchestre de Besançon’. In the same year he worked as assistant conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and with Edo de Waard and Claus Peter Flor.

orkesterLukas Groen studied conducting and composition at the Rotterdam Conservatory (1991-1997), as well as Musicology at the University of Utrecht (1997-1999). Additional he studied with maestros as Claus Peter Flor, Neeme Järvi, Jorma Panula, Gianluigi Gelmetti, and Prof. Wolfgang Harrer.

In recommendations Hans Vonk called him a promising conductor of a high level; composer Klaas de Vries is mentioning his specific insight in contemporary music and Prof. Harrer praises his strong personality, musical-psychological instinct and his experienced way of dealing with singers.

As a composer Lukas Groen has composed various works for ensemble, choir, orchestra and documentary films.

Sellesse plaati süvenedes peaks igaüks selles veenduma: Imbi Tarumi mängus on palju huvitavaid värve, peenekoelisi figuratsioone ja põnevalt kõlama pandud muusikalisi karaktereid. Pilli kandev, mahlane kõla, suur ulatus, registrivalik ja mängutehnilised võimalused sobivad väga hästi just ptantsuse kõrg- ja hilisbaroki muusika esitamiseks. Akadeemilist poolt esindavatest kontsertidest külastasin temperamendist säriseva prantsuse flötisti Stėphane Rėty ja meie klavessinisti Imbi Tarumi baroki gurmee õhtut. Viis flöödisüiti ja -sonaati prantsuse XVIII sajandi esimese poole muusikast andis ülevaatliku pildi baroki- ja rokokooajastu muusikast, iseloomulikest kaunistuste (melismide jm) ahelikest.
