It is music’s big secret that it demands our soul only, but wholly.
Hermann Hesse
From its birth, the Glasperlenspiel has been a festival that ties together the fine arts, music, literature. But also everything else that comes from them and thereby inspires us. The Glasperlenspiel has always attracted our attention and made us curious. In other words, it has made us human, kept us firmly on the ground with our heart and both feet. In his first speech, the President of the Republic of Estonia Alar Karis, a native of Tartu, also suggested: let us read, listen to and take in Estonian culture, it will broaden our horizons. In this way, the Glasperlenspiel has broadened our horizons, sharpened our perception of the world and the connection between different parts of the world and thus our influence on each other. The festival of 2022 also brings world culture to us – big names, big sounds, great lines and touches. Every day Tartu moves more and more towards being the European Capital of Culture 2024 and the Glasperlenspiel will certainly play an important role in opening and expanding cultural borders. And if good dreams come true, we can hope that this year the newest organ in Estonia, a unique baroque organ, will start playing in Tartu St John’s church. I cheer on this great act in my spirit and mind because it makes Tartu bigger and Estonia more beautiful. Or vice versa.
Good spirit to the sonorous tracks of the Glasperlenspiel!

HORTUS MUSICUS – 50 (In co-operation with the Estonian History Museum / the Museum of Theatre and Music)
This year marks 50 years since the founding of Hortus Musicus. Originally known as performers of early music, the ensemble has become a legend in the course of its own lifetime. As of today, they have crossed multiple boundaries – temporal, geographical, and in terms of genre. They are theatrical and vital upstream swimmers, who has risen from former high school and student group to the status of international superstars. The credo of Hortus Musicus is joyfulness, and a creative pride and purity that permeates the tone of everyday life. The beauty, kindness, love and courage that echoes in their music is the air that helps us survive and inspires us to rise above our daily burdens. Curator of the exhibition – Jaanika Juhanson, graphic design – Taavi Varm, costumes – Riina Vanhanen.
