Ulla Krigul is one of the most outstanding organists in Estonia. She has graduated from the Estonian Music High School specializing in piano (Prof Ivari Ilja) and in 2006 took her Master’s at the Estonian Academy of Music, supervised by Prof Andres Uibo. At the period of 2004–2006 she studied at Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna with Martin Haselböck. Ulla Krigul has also attended masterclasses by David Timm, Wolfgang Zerer, Serge Schoonbroodt, Christoph Krummacher, Peter van Dijk, Michael Bouvard, Guy Bovet and Damiano Peretti.
She produces one or two original solo programs annually, where next to Bach, Buxtehude, Bruhns, Muffat and Hindemith, an important role is played by contemporary music. “I am delighted to play new Estonian music that lacks the so-called rules and where there is space for searching and experimenting at the same time not copying anybody. It is usually a great pleasure to interact with living conductors. On the other hand, I also like to work my way through old scores trying to find some less known and exciting pieces.” She has première-performed several works by Estonian composers (Tõnis Kaumann, Galina Grigorjeva, Tõnu Kõrvits, Ülo Krigul, Märt-Matis Lill et al).
As soloist and chamber musician Ulla Krigul has performed in all main Estonian churches, participated in Tallinn International Organ Festival as well as given concerts in Finland, Austria and Sweden. Her most memorable stage and co-operation partners include names like soprano Margarita Voites, singers Oliver Kuusik, Geraldine Casanova, Tuomas Katajala, Andres Köster, Triin Ella and Tõnis Kaumann, a Hungarian pianist Istvan Matyas, trombonist Ivar Kiiv, saxophonist Virgo Veldi and violinist Mari-Liis Uibo.
Ulla Krigul has participated in the “Con Brio” competition (2002), the International Organists’ Competition in Gdańsk (2003) and Mikael Tariverdijev Competition in Kaliningrad (2005).
She is currently working as a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Music as well as holding the position of organist at Tallinn Finnish St Peter’s Congregation.
