Andres Mustonen has performed on the stages of Estonia and the world for about six decades. He has gained fame as a conductor under whom early and new music, symphonic masterpieces and operas have been performed. He has premiered the music of many important composers of our time, such as Arvo Pärt, Krzysztof Penderecki, Sofia Gubaidulina and others.
As a student at the conservatory, he founded the ensemble Hortus Musicus in 1972, the original vocation of which was to study and perform the then almost unknown early, pre-Bach Christian music; over the years, the scope of the ensemble has expanded significantly and it performs both traditional, including oriental music, as well as works by our modern composers.
In recent years, Andres Mustonen has been particularly devoted to the solo works of Johann Sebastian Bach, being the first Estonian violinist to record all of his solo sonatas and partitas, and performed them in different parts of the world.
Already deep in the Soviet era, in 1978, Andres Mustonen started organizing international contemporary and early music festivals; the festival, produced then by the Estonian State Philharmonic and later by Eesti Kontsert, took place under different names (Tallinn Baroque Music Festival, OpeNBaroque) for decades, and starting from 2011 as MustonenFest.
The first Estonian-Israeli music festival MustonenFest Tallinn – Tel Aviv took place with the support of the Estonian Ministry of Culture and the Tallinn City Government in 2014 in major Israeli cities and continues to this day.
Media reviews:
… „Mustonenfesti“ keskmes olid sel aastal Iisraeli muusikud. Kuulda sai viit kava; kontserdid olid peamiselt Tallinnas, aga ka Viljandis, Tartus ja Narvas. Festival vallutas pealinna esinemispaigad, kõik viis kontserti anti eri kontserdisaalides. Alguses see minu arvates natuke lõhestas „Mustonenfesti“ festivalipärasust, aga lõpuks siiski said sisu ja esinejad kokku seotud. Festivali avakontsert pealkirjaga „Vaimne ühtsus“ tõi Tallinna Jaani kirikusse kokku kristlike konfessioonide tunnistajate muusika, mille esitasid mitu Eesti vokaalkollektiivi. Kontsert algas Arvo Pärdi teosega „Ja ma kuulsin hääle …“ Vox Clamantise… esituses. Ansambel laulis Jaani kiriku rõdult, hääled sulasid magusalt sekunditesse. See oli väga ilus algus Arvo Pärdile pühendatud muusika-aastale. (Greta-Liisa Aro, Sirp, 31.01.25, Estonia, whole article)
The festival is organised by the non-profit organisation MustonenFest, in co-operation with partners ERP, Cultural Endowment of Estonia, Tubin Concert Hall, Philly Joe’s, Viljandi Early Music Festival, Viivo Muusika
